Alabama building codes for roof replacement

Alabama has no mandatory statewide residential code. What applies depends on the jurisdiction that issues the permit.

The latest edition of the Alabama State Building Code is based on the 2021 IBC and is promulgated by the Alabama Division of Construction Management, which has authority over certain types of commerical construction only, such as hotels, motels, and movie theaters. No residential code is mandated statewide. Jurisdictions without a residential code in effect on March 9, 2010, were prohibited from adopting any residential or energy codes other than the Alabama Energy and Residential Codes (AERC) adopted by the AERC board, or newer versions thereof. However, jurisdictions that already had a residential code in effect on March 9, 2010, were allowed to continue enforcing that code and to continue amending it after that date. Jurisdictions are given wide discretion to amend the AERC codes once adopted. The AERC is based on the 2015 IRC.
