Michigan building codes for roof replacement
Michigan enforces a residential code statewide.
The latest edition of the Michigan Construction Code is based on the 2021 IBC (effective 04/09/2025) and the 2015 IRC (effective 02/08/2016) and is mandatory statewide. Previous state building codes were based on the 2015 IBC (effective 04/20/2017-04/08/2025) and the 2012 IBC (effective until 04/20/2017) and the 2009 IRC (effective until 02/08/2016). Michigan adopted the 2021 IRC with an effective date of 8/29/2025, but implementation of the 2021 IRC has been paused pending the outcome of pending litigation.
