North Carolina building codes for roof replacement
North Carolina enforces a residential code statewide.
The latest edition of the North Carolina state building code is based on the 2015 IBC and 2015 IRC and is mandatory statewide as of 01/01/2019. The previous edition was based on the 2009 IBC and 2009 IRC, was also mandatory statewide, and was effective until 12/31/2018. North Carolina is currently reviewing the 2021 IBC & IRC for adoption. North Carolina adopted the 2021 IBC and IRC with an original effective date of 7/1/2025. However, North Carolina enacted S.L. 2025-2, which delays the effective date until 12 months after the SFM certifies that certain statutory and publication and distribution requirements have been met. While the effective date remains TBD, the previous code, based on the 2015 IBC, remains in effect.
